United Nations Ends Sanctions on President of Syria Before Presidential Visit

Placeholder Syrian President

United Nations Security Council members approved to an American proposal to lift sanctions on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria prior to his Washington trip the coming week.

Sharaa was named provisional head of state subsequent to commanding a revolutionary movement that ousted the previous leader in winter 2024, concluding thirteen long years of civil war.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz said the UN had sent "an emphatic political statement" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a fresh chapter" after Assad's removal.

Previously, he faced United Nations restrictions while commanding the Muslim faction the HTS movement, which was formerly linked to al-Qaeda. The US removed the group from its registry of global extremist entities during July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

Additionally, the United Nations lifted penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.

Syria's foreign minister expressed satisfaction with the elimination of the penalties, declaring through digital channels: "Syria expresses its appreciation toward America and to friendly nations for backing of Syria and its people."

Upcoming White House Meeting

President Sharaa's presidential meeting this coming Monday follows US President Donald Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the conflict-ravaged nation.

Following their discussion, the US president stated Sharaa had "a real shot at pulling it together".

The pair met initially this past May, when Trump visited Riyadh on a tour of Arab nations.

Following that encounter, Trump portrayed Sharaa as a "tough guy" possessing a "powerful background".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria before he cut connections in 2016.

Prior United States Journey

This week's diplomatic engagement does not represent the president's debut journey to the US during this period. During September, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to present to the global assembly in New York in almost 60 years.

During his address, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status across international circles" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
